Consumer spending across Bradford has fallen by nine per cent since 2008, according to research by Barclays.

But the number of people spending on credit cards, debit cards, cash and cheques has not fallen as much as across the rest of Yorkshire, which saw a drop of 13 per cent in the same period.

In Leeds, consumer spending fell by 17 per cent and in Sheffield it fell by 16 per cent since the fourth quarter of 2008.

Nationally, families aged 40 to 60 have seen the biggest reductions in consumer spending with a 15 per cent decrease, while people aged 60- plus have seen a 13 per cent reduction compared to pre-recession levels.

The under-20s had the lowest drop, reducing their spending by 12 per cent.
