More than a dozen people marked the beginning of Bantam’s History week, on Saturday by following a guided walk and were served beer by Bradford City chairman Mark Lawn. The walk was led by Dave Pendleton, of Thebantamspast museum, and poet Glyn Watkins. The walkers started at The Turls Green pub in Bradford city centre, paused at the Bradford Fire Memorial on the way to the site of Bradford Exchange Station, and then followed the route to the Midland Hotel taken by the Bradford City FA Cup winning team of 1911.
They viewed a new display about the 1911 team, the walk continued to The Sparrow Bier Cafe on North Parade, where Mr Lawn pulled pints of Saltaire Brewery’s Baines Bitter, specially brewed in celebration football collectors cards, invented in Bradford in 1880s by John Baines. One of the walkers, Kathryn Hey, said: “I cannot believe how much history there is in Bradford. I loved it and really learned a lot.”
The walkers collected £85 for the Bradford Burns Unit.
