The turmoil of the 1826 Yorkshire Weavers’ Riots is revealed in new book by a textile historian and speaker.
Riots in Addingham, Bradford and Gargrave in spring 1826 by starving hand loom weavers led to military defence of mills throughout West Yorkshire.
At the height of the turmoil, troops were deployed to Greenhome Mille in Burley-in-Wharfedale, and Otley was described as being an ‘armed camp’.
Author of Trouble At T’Mill, Ilkley resident Dr George Ingle, says the authorities feared a revolution.
Dr Ingle was helped by Ilkley Grammar School pupils Katherine Robinson, Lydia Watson, Sophie Parnaby, Charlotte Smith, Josephine Lingard and Lilian Baldwin who provided illustrations for the book.
