Kirklees Council leaders are set to sign up to a new ‘super council’ covering the whole of West Yorkshire.
The combined authority would work to improve the county’s transport links and economy, drawing powers away from Westminster.
Bradford Council has already agreed to take the plan to the consultation stage, but all five councils must sign up before the plan can progress. York is also hoping to join the authority.
At a meeting of Kirklees Council’s cabinet on Thursday, they will also consider the next stage of development of the West Yorkshire Plus Transport Fund, which would be run by the new combined authority.
Kirklees Cabinet member for regeneration, Councillor Peter McBride, said: “The transport fund is a bold move which secures real investment in our future infrastructure, which will in turn allow us to boost the local economy.
“We are in a stronger position to bid for Government funding when we work together, and as thousands of people travel from one of our council areas to another to work, this makes sense."
