A drunken man who broke his partner’s cheekbone in a “serious, sustained and brutal assault” has been jailed for two years.

A judge branded Paul Goudie an aggressive and violent bully, fuelled by alcohol and drugs.

Goudie, 26, of Canterbury Avenue, Canterbury, Bradford, punched Sarah Cooper in the face, stamped on her and kicked her when he lost his temper after they had been out on Bradford City’s Cup Final day. Goudie, brought to Bradford Crown Court in custody yesterday, pleaded guilty to assaulting Miss Cooper, causing her actual bodily harm, and assaulting a police officer by spitting at him.

Prosecutor Clare Benson said a member of the public called the police after hearing Miss Cooper screaming for help at 9.50pm on February 24.

Police officers saw Goudie pinning her into a corner at his home. He stuck one finger up at them and was abusive and aggressive when arrested. He was violent in the police van and spat repeatedly at an officer taking him into the police station. Miss Benson said Miss Cooper was treated in hospital for grazing and bruising to her body, black eyes and a fractured eye socket.

Goudie had left an imprint of his training shoe on her shoulder when he kicked her while she was on the floor. He had a previous conviction for assaulting a different partner.

In mitigation, it was stated that Goudie had undergone treatment in Leeds Prison to address his drink problem.

He recalled nothing of the incident until he woke in a police cell. Miss Cooper had visited him in prison and was prepared to give him a second chance. Judge Potter said Goudie attacked Miss Cooper after becoming angry and frustrated.
