Two Ilkley volunteers with the Air Training Corps have been awarded the Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificate – an achievement recognised as one of the highest honours in the forces, ranking alongside the MBE.

The two adult volunteers, John Hitchen and David Wood, were presented with their certificates by the Lord-Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Dr Ingrid Roscoe, at Ceres Division Royal Naval Reserve in Carlton Barracks, Leeds.

Squadron Leader Hitchen marks 25 years of voluntary service with the Corps this year.

Adult Warrant Officer Wood, from the same squadron in Wharfedale, joined the unit in 1991 as a civilian instructor while his children were attending as cadets. He has remained with the squadron ever since, long after his children had grown up.
