Romanian man Marinel Florin Gutu, 25, stole fruit and chewing gum worth £217 from the Asda store at Rooley Lane, Bradford.
Prosecutor Jane Farrar said Gutu had spent his last £10 getting to Bradford. He wanted to buy a ticket back to Romania and intended to sell the stolen items, which were recovered.
Bradford and Keighley Magistrates yesterday imposed one day’s detention and referred Gutu, of Doncaster, to the Court Chaplaincy Service.
