A man died after falling down cellar steps at his home in Bingley, an inquest has heard .

Former Royal Mail worker Robert Waugh, 58, of Myrtle Avenue, was discovered by his partner Patrick Sweeney on December 17 last year.

The hearing in Bradford was told how divorced dad Mr Waugh, who had been drinking the day before, was unsteady.

Assistant Deputy Coroner Tim Ratcliffe recorded a verdict of accidental death, telling Mr Sweeney, who had been in bed when it happened, not to blame himself.

Mr Sweeney said he usually tried to persuade Mr Waugh, who had chronic alcoholism, to go up to bed before him.

Mr Ratcliffe said: “Don't blame yourself” but Mr Sweeney replied: “"No, but it’s hard not to be haunted by it.”

At the time of Mr Waugh's death he had the equivalent of six pints of beer in his system, enough to impair his balance, said Mr Ratcliffe.
