A kind-hearted football club in Bradford has kitted out young footballers in Gambia – with the help of sports commentator John Helm.
Tyersal gave five full kits and a variety of shirts, shorts and training tops after Bradford City put them in contact with Hildred Helm, co-founder of charity Children of the Gambia.
The kits, which club secretary John O’Reilly said represented ten years of history at Tyersal, were collected by commentator and Baildon resident Mr Helm.
Mr O’Reilly predicted success for the youngsters using Tyersal’s kit and said the club was delighted that Mr Helm’s wife Hildred had sent them pictures of how the kit was being used. He said: “They should do well – we had some amazing cup victories in the kits!
“It was amazing to see the kit out there and at least it is going to some use. From the look of the photographs they look very happy with it.
“And I’m sure our sponsors will be pleased to see what we have done with something they paid for.”
On why the club donated the kit, Mr O’Reilly said: “It was just a case of donating to charity.
“We had bags and bags of old kit that wouldn’t be used again and due to club development we needed more space. We didn’t want to just throw the kit away.
“We had heard about this project and got in touch with Bradford City, who put us in touch with Hildred Helm.
“It’s the first time we have done something like this.”
Tyersal will also look to do something similar in the future, said Mr O’Reilly, who added: “When it comes to clearing out again and we have a collection of kits, we might send some out there again or to another charity – as long as it goes somewhere worthwhile.”
For now, Tyersal are looking into the possibility of a match against the players who have their old kit.
“Some kind of game has been discussed,” said Mr O’Reilly. “It would be good to have a game against them either here or over there.”
