Emergency gas main repairs were being carried out tonight after the system was damaged by builders working on the construction of the new Bradford College buildings in Great Horton Road.
Ian Cunningham, Northern Gas Networks, customer operations area manager said: "At this stage, we are unable to advise when the emergency repair will be completed, but we would like to reassure the public that our engineers are on site and that we are working hard to rectify the situation.
"The safety of our customers is our number one priority and we can confirm that the situation is safe and under control. There is no danger to the general public.
"We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience caused and again, reassure the public that we are doing everything we can to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.
"People in Bradford city centre may smell gas in the coming hours and we would urge them to report any smell to us.
"Anyone smelling gas should contact the National Gas Emergency Service, free 24 hours of the day on 0800 111 999."
