The Bradford dad-of-three shot dead during a police drugs raid last week was killed by a single gunshot wound to the head, it has been revealed.

Colin Berry, 49, of Buckingham Close, Clayton, died as unarmed police officers executed a search warrant at his home a week ago.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is now investigating the events that led up to Mr Berry’s death, including interviewing the officers involved.

None of the three members of the Neighbourhood Policing Team, who carried out the lunchtime raid at Mr Berry’s detached home, have been suspended and all are on full duties.

“It tends to be armed officers who are instantly suspended in any shooting investigated by the IPCC,” a police source told the Telegraph & Argus.

An IPCC investigator attended the scene last week and staff are continuing to liaise with members of Mr Berry’s family.

Although a post-mortem examination was held last Friday, it was not until yesterday that all family members could be contacted and his name formally released along with the findings of the cause of his death. An inquest into Mr Berry’s death is likely to be held in Bradford, but a date is yet to be set.

The nature of the death of Mr Berry, who was thought to run his own security business, has baffled residents who knew him as a helpful, smiling neighbour.

Some people in the street have told how people would trust him to keep an eye on their properties when away on holiday and he was known to be an animal lover with a Rhodesian ridgeback dog, rabbits and pigeons.

Tattooed and muscular, he had the look of a body-builder or former member of the armed services, neighbours said.

“Whenever I bumped into him in the street he was always friendly and polite,” said one Buckingham Crescent resident, speaking beside the cordoned-off house.

Initial reports suggested Mr Berry died after a struggle with the officers during which a firearm was discharged.

West Yorkshire Police voluntarily referred the matter to the IPCC to conduct the inquiry.
