It’s all in The Game Bingley Arts Centre Bingley Little Theatre’s production opened with their usual high standard of set, transforming itself very amusingly for Act Two.
Set in 1914, the play is about a fictional town’s football team and their star player, Jack Metherill, who is in pursuit of Elsie Whitworth, the owner’s daughter.
Add to this the angst of a failing club with its owner Austin desperately trying to save its fortunes by whatever means make this an engaging piece.
Jonathan Scott’s production does it justice. Peter Whitley plays an admirable Austin Whitworth and Ian Wilkinson plays a pompous London solicitor very convincingly.
Relative newcomers Tim Sanderson-Wellings and Joanne Gray as Jack and Elsie both deliver well with both attack and tenderness.
Also delightful were Ella Jeffrey, as her happy-go-lucky sister Flo and James Margerrison as the arty idle Leo.
Apart from a couple of technical blips and some first night nerves, this was an excellent night offering a good mix of drama and amusement.
Runs until Saturday.
