Bradford Council’s Tory group has called for a controversial permit scheme for Council-run tips to be scrapped.
People will soon have to show a new residents’ permit before they can get into any of the district’s Household Waste Recycling Centres.
But, as reported in Monday’s Telegraph & Argus, Bradford Council bosses have been forced to apologise after the permit application form mistakenly said people could not drive waste to the dump on behalf of a friend, relative or neighbour without a separate waste carriers’ licence.
Councillor Mike Ellis (Con, Bingley Rural) said he still was not convinced the scheme would save money.
He said: “The whole situation remains a mess and I am of the view that it will prove to be a false economy, costing more than it was intended to save, whilst being near unenforceable.”
He added: “The Council has not provided elected members with any indication of whether it is still financially worth bothering with pursuing this, once the costs of the various debacles have been factored in.
“In light of how this has been handled I am calling on the Council to simply scrap the scheme and do what they should have done at the outset, do some proper research into cross-border refuse recycling and organise a reciprocal agreement with neighbouring councils so that people can take their refuse wherever is convenient.”
