Hot young magician Dynamo, controversial reality TV series Make Bradford British and a re-make of Room at the Top are nominated at the BAFTA Television Awards.
Dynamo, who grew up on Bradford’s Delph Hill estate, wowed viewers with his Magician Impossible show on the Watch channel last year.
His jaw-dropping stunts included walking across the Thames, performing a Matrix-style levitation and moving a girl’s tan line up her arm.
The show is nominated for Best Entertainment Programme, up against The Graham Norton Show, Have I Got News For You and A League Of Their Own.
Channel 4’s Make Bradford British is up for Best Factual Programme. The ‘social experiment’ put eight Bradford district people from different racial, religious and cultural backgrounds in a house together and examined the question of what it means to be British. Those taking part were asked to answer questions similar to those used in the UK Citizenship test.
The programme attracted controversy, with former Bradford Council leader Ian Greenwood claiming the title implied that Bradford was not British, an inference he found “deeply offensive”. He told the Telegraph & Argus the Council had made it clear to Channel 4 producers that it was unhappy with the title and some of the content.
Also competing for a BAFTA is the first adaptation of Bingley writer John Braine’s novel Room at the Top since the Oscar-winning 1959 film.
Partly filmed at Bradford’s City Hall, the TV drama was originally due to be screened in April, 2011 but was pulled hours beforehand due to a row over screen rights. Starring Matthew McNulty, Maxine Peake and Dr Who actress Jenna-Louise Coleman, it was finally shown on BBC Four last year and is up for Best Single Drama.
Based on Braine’s classic post-war novel, Room at the Top follows working-class Joe Lampton’s ruthless attempts to climb the social ladder in a northern city, based on Bradford.
Hit BBC1 drama Last Tango in Halifax, partly filmed in Skipton and Keighley, is up for Best Drama Series. Its stars Derek Jacobi, Ann Reid and Sarah Lancashire are nominated for Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress respectively.
The Arqiva British Academy Television Awards will take place on Sunday, May 12, at London’s Royal Festival Hall.
