A junior medic, who denies trying to kiss a young mother in his consulting room, yesterday insisted they had a doctor-patient relationship.

Dr Aju Varghese, 33, who also denies making an unwarranted examination of the woman’s breasts after she complained of severe stomach ache, rejected claims that he had become obsessed with the patient, a professional woman in her 20s, at a time when he was under emotional stress.

Varghese, who is on trial at Bradford Crown Court, told the jury he had not exploited the patient in any way.

The woman has claimed Varghese, who pleads not guilty to two charges of sexual assault, carried out the breast examination after a consensual abdominal examination at the surgery in Bingley, after locking the door to the room.

It is alleged the trainee doctor became emotional and asked for a hug, then pulled the woman to him and tried to kiss her.

Varghese, of Baden Street, Harrogate, has told the jury that none of the incidents took place.

He told the court yesterday that he remained at the practice, but was now supervised when he saw female patients.

The trial continues this week.
