Real ale enthusiasts at this weekend’s Haworth Beer Festival can raise a glass to a well-known pub licensee.
The 2013 festival is dedicated to former Kings Arms landlord Terry Barnes who died last month. Punters can even drink a special beer brewed in his memory, specially for the festival, and entitled Merry Terry after his nickname. Merry Terry has been created by Keighley-based Goose Eye Brewery and is described as a hoppy-flavoured 4.2 per cent pale ale.
It is particularly fitting because the lead organiser of the festival – now in its second year – is Terry’s stepdaughter Kath Thornton.
She wanted to pay tribute to Terry, 76, who was landlord of the Kings Arms in Main Street from 1976 to 1991. Kath expects to sell the entire barrel of Merry Terry, 72 pints.
The festival will offer 25 beers made by micro-breweries, half from the area. There will also be a variety of ciders and lagers. The festival, in Haworth Old School Rooms, began yesterday and will run today from 11am until late, and tomorrow from 11am until the beer runs out, expected to be early evening.
