A one-way system in Keighley town centre could be ready within 18 months, it has emerged.
A report to the next Keighley Area Committee says “significant” funding of more than £1.4 million has been secured for the project.
This means that Bradford Council engineers can now begin work on a detailed design and consultation.
The one-way system, estimated to cost up to £1.5 million, will have a clockwise route using East Parade, Hanover Street and Cavendish Street.
Road experts believe this will reduce the average delay for vehicles travelling through Keighley town centre’s heavily-congested streets.
The one-way system is one of a number of jam-busting measures due to be outlined to the area committee.
These have been put forward by a working group of town and district councillors and Bradford Council officers, who used a detailed “micro simulation” model to test potential schemes.
The working group tested large-scale one-way systems for Keighley, but discovered they would create problems at specific junctions and significantly increase journey lengths for many vehicles.
