A Mercedes-Benz which caused £11,000 of damage to a parked Range Rover in the centre of Bradford on Easter Monday was caught on CCTV as the driver sped away from the crash.

Margaret Crompton had left her three-year-old company 4x4 parked on the kerb outside the city’s National Media Museum as she enjoyed a night out with friends.

But at midnight, a silver Mercedes-Benz C-Class coupe, accelerating up Little Horton Lane, slammed into the rear of the three-tonne Vogue diesel, lifting it into the air and wrecking the bumper and rear suspension.

“I am absolutely gutted,” said Miss Crompton. “The repair bill will be about £11,000 for a new rear axle, shock absorbers and body damage.

“But the most shocking thing is nobody stopped at the scene, or has so far reported the accident to the police. There were a lot of other cars about, a taxi and a VW Caddy van, so somebody saw it happen.”

The £40,000 car is owned by her brother’s building machinery business, The Thomas Crompton Group, in Neville Road, West Bowling, where Miss Crompton works in the office.

“When you look at the CCTV it’s clear that the Mercedes is racing along beside another car before the accident,” she said.

The film shows how the new-looking Mercedes swerved to try and miss the Range Rover, but then the coupe side-swiped it with its rear nearside quarter. The rear of the Mercedes is pushed out wide by the force of impact, and the driver struggles to avoid hitting the Range Rover’s front end before regaining control.

“The police and the Council are studying the footage to try and track where the Mercedes went next, so I’m hopeful they will find out who did it,” Miss Crompton said.

Meanwhile, her car has been taken for a costly repair. “Bradford is punishing for car insurance at anytime, so once again this will be another burden for a business to bear,” Miss Crompton said.
