Police are warning householders to take simple steps to avoid becoming a victim of crime.
They include locking all doors and windows, even if they are at home, leaving a light on when they go out, and hiding all valuables, including car keys.
They should fit outside security lighting and remove tools, ladders and other implements from the garden.
They should report any suspicious people or vehicles in the neighbourhood.
A police spokesman said: “Many crimes have been thwarted after members of the public reported unusual or suspicious activity to the police. If you see a crime in progress always dial 999.”
