ROUND FOUR: WIGAN 0, CITY 0 (AFTER EXTRA-TIME – City won 4-2 on penalties)
A travelling army of 5,000 and more witnessed a magical night at a disbelieving DW Stadium.
A whopping 59 places stood between City and Wigan on the league ladder but at the end it was the League Two side toasting a quarter-final ticket – and how they had earned it.
The double injury loss of centre halves Luke Oliver and Andrew Davies at Burton three days earlier had surely kyboshed any outside chance of an upset. Ricky Ravenhill was also ruled out after being controversially sent off in the same game.
But the patched-up Bantams proved equal to the mighty challenge. Ivan Ramis had an early header ruled out for offside but the visitors soon settled and Matt Duke saved at the feet of Mauro Boselli.
James Hanson could have had a penalty after a bump from Ben Watson, then Stephen Darby appeared to be sandwiched by two defenders but again nothing was given.
With 15 minutes left, Zavon Hines was suddenly sent tearing away by Alan Connell’s pass but Wigan keeper Ali Al Habsi blocked the winger’s shot with his back.
Wigan dominated extra-time but City refused to crack, although Jordi Gomez wasted a glorious one-on-one chance by shooting inches wide.
So it went to penalties, the area where the underdogs reigned supreme. True to form, all four of City’s spot-kicks were bang on but Wigan’s nerve went when Shaun Maloney spooned over the bar.
Gomez had to convert their next to stay alive but Duke guessed right and the Bantams hysteria began.
Wigan: Al Habsi, Stam (Orsula 120), Ramis, Piscu, Watson, Jones, Gomez, Fyvie, Redmond (Beausejour 77), Boselli, McManaman (Maloney 77).
City: Duke, Darby, McArdle, McHugh, Meredith, Hines (Baker 101), Doyle, Atkinson, Thompson (Jones 56), Wells (Connell 65), Hanson.
