Right back Stephen Darby was the most unlikely hero to complete City’s spectacular fightback against their League Two rivals.

Just over 4,000 fans braved the driving rain at Valley Parade – and how their loyalty was rewarded on another night of drama.

City looked to be down an out when they found themselves two down inside the first half hour.

Billy Kee’s smart finish gave Matt Duke no chance and then Aaron Webster doubled Burton’s advantage, heading home a corner despite the best efforts of Gary Jones on the line.

Phil Parkinson brought on the cavalry after an hour with a treble substitution – and the arrival of James Hanson, Kyel Reid and Nahki Wells transformed the contest. Wells sparked the recovery after 83 minutes, taking James Meredith’s pass in his stride and lashing into the far corner.

Duke saved superbly from Matt Paterson on the break before Wells struck again, diverting home an intended overhead kick from Hanson.

That meant another extra-time and the game was five minutes from penalties when Darby appeared 25 yards out and beat Stuart Tomlinson with a low drive. City were into the last 16 for the first time in a quarter of a century.
