A Parish Councillor has beef with his local supermarket after finding a meaty ready meal he purchased to contain so much gristle he called it “not fit for human consumption.”
Councillor Martin Humphreys, Chairman of Wrose Parish Council, purchased a beef bourguignon from the Morrisons store at Five Lane Ends last Saturday.
Ready to tuck in after cooking the meal he said he was aghast to find each piece “riddled” with fat and gristle.
He photographed the meat and e-mailed the images and a complaint to the supermarket’s head office in Bradford.
Coun Humphreys has even threatened to show the meat to Trading Standards and consumer affairs show “Watchdog.” In his letter to the company, he said: “I would like you to take a look at the photographs of a totally disgusting product sold by your supermarket.
“I purchased the product, a Bistro Beef Bourguignon, on Saturday and after cooking and upon opening the pack was nearly sick.
“Every piece of beef is riddled with huge chunks of gristle.
“This is an appalling product and not fit for human consumption. I will be complaining to the Trading Standards Office and 'Watchdog' as this product should be withdrawn from sale immediately.”
A spokesman for Morrisons said they have since been in touch with Coun Humphreys. They said that they are investigating the issue with their supplier, and say that while the beef is from the cheek and is normally slightly fatty, this example was not acceptable.
The supermarket’s website features a description of the dish by chef Pierre Koffman, saying: “I created this dish in the same way that I would in my restaurant, with no expense spared when it came to the quality of the ingredients.
“We’ve used beef ox cheek as it’s so succulent and a good dark wine that will give a good colour to the sauce."
