A banned driver who sped round Bradford at up to 80mph with a stash of drugs in his car has been jailed for 22 months.
Zulfiqar Ali drove “with complete disregard for the motoring laws”, Recorder Taryn Turner told him at Bradford Crown Court yesterday.
Branding his record for driving offences “shocking”, she added: “The threat of prison is just a traffic hazard as far as you are concerned.”
Recorder Turner banned Ali, 31, of Padma Close, Listerhills, Bradford, from driving for two years.
Ali pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, having no insurance and possession of heroin, cocaine and cannabis.
Prosecutor Julia Harrow said police officers saw Ali driving an uninsured Skoda in Ingleby Road, Girlington, Bradford, at 3.15am on November 28.
He accelerated away and was pursued for 15 minutes at up to 80mph in a 30mph zone, the court was told.
Ali jumped red lights, failed to give way at junctions and reversed down the pavement during the chase along Great Horton Road, Laisteridge Lane and Horton Grange Road.
He was still trying to escape when police officers were attempting to smash the windscreen after he hit their patrol car and tried to shunt it backwards.
Ali’s female passenger was visibly shaken, Miss Harrow said.
He had 13 wraps of heroin and some cocaine and cannabis in the vehicle.
In mitigation Ali’s barrister, Gerald Hendron, said he was married with a child and his wife was expecting a baby.
He panicked when he released the police were after him because he had been banned from driving for three years in 2010. Mr Hendron said Ali knew he was going to jail and regretted not being there for his wife when his baby was born.
He pleaded guilty to all the offences when he first appeared at the magistrates’ court.
