While welcoming the latest 8,000 fall in regional unemployment levels, a trade union boss says women have been worst hit by job cuts, particularly in the public sector.
While there had been a 12,000 fall in male unemployment in Yorkshire over the past 12 months, regional TUC secretary Bill Adams said the number of women out of work had risen by 5,000.
Mr Adams warned that worse was to come for many female workers, who account for 65 per cent of public sector staff, as only half the Government’s ‘savage’ austerity cuts had been implemented.
