Graeme Lee wants to be City’s ‘Captain Marvel’ this season by lifting the League Two title.
The big defender has been handed the skipper’s armband for the new campaign and he would love to be the man stepping up to collect the celebration silverware.
Lee has had a taste of success after holding aloft the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy with Doncaster two seasons ago. Now, as City’s on-field leader, he is hungry for more.
He said: “Ideally that’s the plan. That’s what we are all up for. Every single one of the players and staff at the club wants promotion.
“I’ve come here to help do that and if I can lift something at the end of the season, it would be absolutely brilliant.
“It’s a real honour for me to be named captain at such a club like this. You look round at the good players in the squad and I do feel privileged.”
With his previous captaincy experience at the Keepmoat, Lee was always favourite to succeed David Wetherall as skipper as well as centre half.
Boss Stuart McCall said: “He has got leadership qualities, no doubt about that. Maybe he’s not over-vocal but he is a good pro and very good at what he does.”
Lee has played in City’s last four friendlies and his partnership at the heart of the back four with Matt Clarke is already beginning to click.
With Rhys Evans installed in goal, Lee believes the right ingredients are in place to provide a solid defensive platform for the season ahead.
He said: “It’s all about bedding in and trying to strike up an understanding. Clarkey has impressed me and we’re getting used to how each other plays and what to expect.
“I’ve also played with Mark Bower as well and he’s another good centre half so there is strong competition for places, which is a good sign.
“Rhys has done very well and has looked outstanding in the last two games. That was a position we were hoping to get done as soon as possible and I think we’ve got the right man in.
“But looking throughout the squad, there are good players. I’ve been impressed every time when the young lads have come on and seeing the apprentices in training, there is a lot of good talent coming up.”
City’s pre-season has thrown up a mixed bag of results but Lee points to the performances in the last two outings against Burnley and Oldham as proof that the team are peaking at the right time for Saturday’s big kick-off.
He said: “We were disappointed to lose in the last few seconds against Burnley after giving them a really good game. I know it’s only a friendly but it hurt to get beaten like that.
“But we came back against a team who always do well in League One and deserved our win.
“We feel as though everything has gone well in pre-season but now we just want to get out there against Notts County. Hopefully we can start the season in the right way and get some points on the board straight away.”
