Peter Jackson will today sign a teenage midfielder he calls “the best 16-year-old I have seen”.
Scotland under-17 international Scott Brown has agreed a two-year deal with City after making a big impression in pre-season training. The club also have the option to extend the contract by a further two years.
Six-footer Brown, spotted by chief scout Archie Christie, has already made one senior appearance for Clyde.
And, while he has come in with a view to joining the new development squad, Jackson would have no hesitation in throwing him in with the first team.
Jackson said: “I think he’s a real find. We feel we have a real talent on our hands.
“It’s a big ask for someone his age to leave home to come down to England and impress like he has done.
“He’s been thrown in the deep end with the senior players but his fitness levels are good and you can see the kid has got ability. He’s impressed everybody, the other players and the coaches.
“It’s early days yet but he’s as good as any 16-year-old I’ve seen and I’ve watched a lot of kids come through.”
Central midfielder Brown is described by Scottish sources as an elegant player with great technical ability.
Jackson has indicated the rookie could get fast-tracked into his plans.
He added: “I’ve given 16-year-olds chances at Huddersfield in my time there and I wouldn’t be frightened about playing Scott. He’s the first one signed in the development area but he could well be part of things for next season as a squad player. We’ve been that impressed with him.
“He’s got a lot of developing to do but he’s got the attributes to do well in the game. If he learns and stays disciplined then I believe he can achieve big things.
“Scott has done everything in pre-season that the seniors have and not looked out of place at all. He’s approached training very well and we’re looking forward to him developing into a really good player.”
Christie said: “The scouts who had seen the boy up in Scotland thought he was the best in his position in the country.
“Jacko only needed to watch him for 45 minutes and was convinced. He was very quick to get him signed.”
But City have missed out on another midfield target, understood to be former Sheffield Wednesday captain Tommy Miller. He is believed to be accepting a Championship offer.
