Stunned City were knocked off the top as Valley Parade bogey team Bournemouth did it again.
The south coast side, who had lost only two of their last seven visits, were worthy winners as Stuart McCall's side stuttered to their first home defeat of the season.
Danny Hollands nodded Bournemouth ahead after 38 minutes, converting a cross from the excellent Sammy Igoe as City were caught cold on the break.
But Joe Colbeck levelled matters within four minutes, lashing home his first goal of the season after a stray clearance from Lee Bradbury.
City hoped that would act as the springboard for an Exeter-style second half. But Bournemouth refused to be ruffled.
Jeff Goulding restored their lead with his first goal in league football and centre half Jason Pearce made sure with a thumping header.
Michael Boulding hit the bar and Colbeck, again the pick of the home players, chipped over the bar as City rallied late on but they finished well beaten.
City also lost Paul Arnison after 25 minutes to a calf injury that will keep the right back out for at least next week's tough trip to Shrewsbury.
CITY: Evans, Arnison, Lee, Clarke, Heckingbottom, Colbeck, Bullock, McLaren, Daley, Thorne, Boulding. Subs: Bower, Conlon, Moncur, Nix, Furman.
