Chris Brandon suffered another injury blow on his comeback reserve game.
Brandon limped off six minutes into the second half after turning his ankle in a challenge with Peter Winn.
The Bradford-born midfielder has only recently returned from an injury he suffered on his other ankle during pre-season. He was hoping to feature in the squad for Saturday’s home game with Exeter.
And further drama followed seconds later when Brandon’s replacement Ryan Newton took a kick in the head. He had to be taken to hospital after the game for a precautionary scan.
Midfielders Kyle Nix and Luke Sharry both had early chances and only confident handling from Iron keeper Josh Lillis denied Nix, Dean Furman and Rory Boulding.
City took the lead in the second half, Furman coolly chipping over Lillis.
And they wrapped up victory when Lillis failed to hold a loose ball and it fell to Simon Ainge for an easy tap-in.
City team: McLaughlin, Cutler, O’Brien, Sharry, Ainge, Bower, Brandon (Newton, Horne), Furman, Boulding, Osborne, Nix (Carson).
