Jason Demetriou has raided Leeds Rhinos in a bid to boost Cougars’ championship challenge.
The player-coach snapped up two talented 19-year-olds this week from the Super League club following a run of three straight defeats.
George Elliott and Jake Normington have both arrived on one-month loan deals to strengthen three-quarter options.
Elliott, a wing or centre, has already featured for the Rhinos first team, making his debut against Crusaders on Easter Monday and is an England Academy representative in both league and union.
Centre Normington has been a regular feature in his club’s under-20s side this season.
“We’ve brought in two new players who we think will strengthen the squad,” said Demetriou.
“Jake is a big, strong, wide-running centre who fits the bill for what we need. George has already played for the first team and will most likely play on the wing for us but can play centre too.
“The two lads can’t wait to get here, so much so they haven’t even asked about money yet.
“That’s the kind of attitude I want to see. I want players who are keen to play and make the most of opportunities, rather than counting the pennies.
“It puts pressure on our existing three-quarters and that’s something we’ve not really had so far this season.”
Demetriou is still in the market for a half-back after failing to seal a loan deal for Bradford youngster Cain Southernwood. The Bulls are keen for the 19-year-old to continue his development in house.
“I’m actively in the hunt for a half-back but it’s not as easy as it seems,” said Demetriou.
“I’m always looking and if I can get the right player, I think that will make this team complete.”
Cougars’ next game is a trip to South Wales Scorpions on Sunday, June 26.
