Bradford Park Avenue’s tilt for promotion to the Blue Square North will be decided at Horsfall Stadium on Saturday.

The club’s roller-coaster UniBond League season has kept their fans enthralled and if they beat Boston United in the Premier Division play-off final it will send them into raptures.

As runners-up after 38 league games – 40 if the two against King’s Lynn, who went to the wall during the campaign, had counted – Avenue missed out on automatic promotion by just one point.

So they doubled their resolve to beat Kendal Town in the play-offs semi-final on Monday, setting up this winner-takes-all finale, and have home advantage by virtue of finishing the regular season above Boston, who were third.

Avenue chief executive Bob Blackburn said: “This is a big game and we sent our management team of JD (manager John Deacey) and Vinny (assistant Vince Brockie) down to watch Boston beat North Ferriby in the other semi-final.

“After an entire season, it comes down to 90 minutes. Ten months of football and it ends like this. It could not be more exciting for anyone – us, the players, the fans or even the league itself.

“The lads are ready for it and if they play anything like they did on Monday it will be a great game to watch. They certainly stepped up to the plate. Some big names needed to stand up and be counted and they did just that.”

Deacey is hoping the number of home fans is not dwarfed by the masses of visiting supporters and he saw some familiar faces in the stands on Monday.

“We watched them on Tuesday but they were up here on Monday checking on us as well because you have to do that last bit of homework,” said the Avenue boss.

“I hope word spreads through the T&A coverage that this is a massive game for us and that it brings all of the old Avenue fans out of the woodwork.

“There were a lot of our supporters down on Monday night and after what they saw I’m sure they will come back.

“Even if we are outnumbered on the terraces, and we could be because Boston are expecting to bring a thousand-plus, home advantage is still important.

“It would have been different preparing to make the long trip to Boston. At least we can take things at our pace and be on familiar ground.

“My players have to be up for it but relaxed at the same time. That is my philosophy on it and it’s my job to get that over to the players.

“These kinds of games are why you play and manage or even support a club. There are not enough of them over your career or lifetime, so you have to make the most of them.”

Deacey reports no new injuries following Monday’s 2-1 win but is hoping midfielder Jamie Price will be fit to return.

Price took a knock in the 5-0 victory at Hucknall Town in the final game of the regular season.
