WEST Bowling claimed their first piece of silverware of the season when they beat Thornbury Celtic 3-1 at Manningham Mills on Sunday in the Goals Sponsored senior cup final.
Thornbury were marginally the better team in a poor first half and took the lead after 29 minutes.
Both teams looked to be tired after a long season but West Bowling bossed the second half and restored parity after 65 minutes with an own goal.
The resultant pressure from the league leaders brought its reward when after 73 minutes a free-kick from Joe Jagger beat the defensive wall and rattled the Celtic goal post.
That came a minute before Chris Wood scored from a free kick from outside the area and Jagger then added a goal for Bowling to give the winners a hard-earned victory against a side that could have beaten them with steadier finishing in front of goal.
West Bowling have a chance of winning a treble this season after winning the league cup because they are also leading the premier division by three points from closest challengers White Eagles.
Both teams have now played nineteen matches each and clashing in the last match of the season where the destination of the league title could depend on the result of this match.
Both teams clash in the Bradford and district senior Sunday cup at Thackley on Tuesday evening 7.30pm kick-off with Eagles having a chance of a double themselves.
White Eagles took advantage of Bowling winning the cup at the weekend by closing the gap with a 4-3 victory over George Hotel.
George Hotel burst into a two-goal lead early on to rock Eagles, who were threadbare with injuries and unavailable players.
Eagles got one back through Marcus Edwards before half-time to give them hope.
It was all one-way traffic early on in the second half and goals from Aaron Metcalfe and Levi Maturine got Eagles’ noses in front.
But it did not last as George showed they were not going to go quietly and equalized.
They could have snatched it but a fizzing drive was turned round the post by Andy Smith in the Eagles goal and with only a few minutes remaining Edwards bundled home from close range to send the home team into delirium.
In the first division Swaine Green have had a late surge of form and it continued against Prospect with a 4-2 victory at Seymour Street.
Goals from Aran Basi, Simon McQuiston, Carl Priestley gave the three valuable points to Green who moved into second position behind Allerton.
Prospect replied with strikes by James Fennell and Kingsley Rowe.
In division 1A, Thornton United head the division after winning 3-2 at fourth-placed Horse and Groom and play second positioned Queensbury next Sunday at Foxhill Park in an 11am kick-off.
At the same time, a crucial match takes place at Arkwright Street when second positioned Lyceum entertain third placed Grass Greener United.
The home team need to win the match they do the double championship and cup winners but for the visitors nothing less than an eleven goal victory will give them the championship.
In division2 B, Salts Sunday had an emphatic 5-1 victory over FC Victoria with goals from Adam Hartley, Blakey Rowbotham, Jake Murgatroyd and a brace from Ryan Whitfield.
