The shocking amount of rubbish being dumped on railway lines in the Bradford district once again hits the headlines today.
This is an issue that is blighting many areas of our district, but railway lines in particular seem to be treated purely as dumping grounds for people’s waste.
And for one councillor, the state of the side of the tracks at Forster Square Station in Bradford as people come into the city has prompted him to call for action.
As Coun Kevin Warnes points out, the vast quantities of waste including things like rubbish bags, cans, paper, household waste and all manner of detritus which are seen through the windows of trains coming into the city create a terrible first impression for visitors.
Landowners Network Rail have said they will be carrying out a clean up at the end of November – and even then, only if they the resources.
While it is clearly not their fault that this has happened, it is ultimately their responsibility and the company should think again about leaving a clean up so long.
But the real culprits here are the anti-social idiots who believe they are untitled to tip their waste and filth wherever they fancy.
More has to be done to catch and punish these people appropriately.
Both the Council and organisations like Network Rail must play their part by setting up measure like CCTV and better security to tackle the fly-tippers.
But all of us have a role to play, from tidying up after ourselves to reporting anyone we see dumping waste around the district. Why should we allow a few mindless yobs to defile our environment in this way?
