AMany people may be surprised to learn that Bradford, a place so far from the sea, has such a proud record of supporting lifeboats.

They may also be surprised to learn that this tradition reaches back so far – in fact this Saturday the city will celebrate 150 years of support for the RNLI with an event in Centenary Square.

However, it is easier to comprehend when you consider that Bradfordians have a long association with the coast.

In its industrial heyday, for example, the city and district was home to huge textile factories and their many thousands of workers would head to the coast on factory holidays and works outings.

Even today, the seaside is a popular family destination to enjoy what little summer sun we get. And now as then, every day-tripper could need the help of the RNLI, for it is not just stricken ships that these brave crews help. Swimmers in trouble, people who fall from a pier, or bathers carried out to sea on inflatables are just some who may need rescuing.

Indeed, it is probable that many people from this area owe their lives or the lives of loved ones to these courageous and selfless volunteers.

Little wonder, then, that Bradfordians appreciate the crews are prepared to dig deep to help them. And that support, stretching down through the ages, is something we can be proud of – long may it continue.
