There are many wonderful sights and attractions in the Bradford district, from breathtaking natural scenery to man-made visitor draws such as the City Park, from places of historical significance to parks and museums.
It is somewhat strange, then, that the latest edition of the Thompson Local guide for this area utterly fails to name a single Bradford destination among its list of places to go and things to do in the north of England.
Obviously these listings are meant to cover a wide area but it would have been nice for a product that is targeted at Bradford to include one or two attractions from this area in its pages.
Many visitors come to the district to see, for example, Haworth - with its Bronte links - and the National Media Museum. But, as popular as these places are, they certainly would not turn their noses up at more custom, especially the Media Museum which is still under a threat of funding cuts that casts a long shadow over its prospects.
Perhaps we in Bradford don’t do enough to shout out about the great things we have here. We should be working harder to convey to people outside the district that there is much more to Bradford than its limited national media portrayal and the somewhat negative folklore that seems to nestle in the national psyche.
Bradford Council’s tourism bosses are quite rightly angry at Thompson Local’s omissions but, as disappointing as this is, perhaps it gives an opportunity for everyone involved in tourism in Bradford, West Yorkshire and beyond to take a look with fresh eyes at what’s great about the district and to concentrate on selling us a little better.
