Food safety experts are investigating after a Baildon family found sausage rolls bought from a Bradford supermarket were riddled with mould.
The mould on the inside of the sausage rolls, bought from a Netto store, went unnoticed before several were eaten.
The snacks were eaten on August 10 – the sell-by date on them was August 12.
Susan Verity, 44, of Woodcott Avenue, Baildon, said: “We had a picnic. I ate two of them and my husband had one.
“It was only when my son asked if we could break into it so he could have the pastry without the sausage that we noticed the meat was thick with mould.
“It was disgusting.”
When the family returned to the Netto supermarket in Manningham where they had purchased the sausage rolls, two more packets of the same sausage rolls were found to be affected by mould.
Mrs Verity said: “We went to the hospital because we were so concerned.
“Luckily we haven’t been ill yet, but the nurse said it could take 48 hours. She was disgusted.”
The sausage rolls have since been investigated by Environmental Health.
A Bradford Council spokesman said: “We received a complaint that mouldy sausage rolls had been bought from the Netto store in Manningham Lane.
“We visited the store in order to assess the food safety management systems and the company is co-operating with our investigation.
“The sausage rolls are not prepared in the store and so we will now be contacting the manufacturer.”
A spokesman for Netto said: “We have contacted Mrs Verity to apologise. We are taking this matter very seriously.
“As a result of Mrs Verity’s complaint, in partnership with our supplier, we examined a number of other chilled products in the store and found no further issues. We are also in the process of testing the product Mrs Verity returned and are undertaking a full investigation to ensure this isolated incident does not happen again.
“We are very grateful to Mrs Verity for bringing this matter to our attention.”
