Fire crews tackle Joda Freight lorry blaze in Bradford Road, Shipley

Fire crews tackled a lorry fire in Shipley this morning.

The wagon, from Cross Hills-based haulage company Joda Freight, was ablaze on Bradford Road, just past the junction with St Paul's Road.

Watch Commander Chris Hargreaves, from Shipley Fire Station, said crews were called to the scene at 8.30am.

He said: "When we arrived, the cab was fully involved in the fire, which was a bit unusual.

"I spoke to the driver who had been driving towards Bradford and gone through the junction when he heard a loud bang under the cab."

He added the driver had slowed down and then a member of the public had raised the alarm about the fire and shouted for him to get out.

The driver quickly got out of the lorry injury free. 

Watch Commander Hargreaves added: "The cab was fully involved and the fire started to impinge on the back where the goods were, but luckily it didn't spread."

Firefighters used a breathing apparatus set at the scene and two hose reels to extinguish the blaze.

They stayed at the scene until around 10am until a recovery vehicle arrived and the scene was made safe. 

Bingley Fire Station was also mobilised to the blaze, but were returned, and West Yorkshire Police helped to manage traffic at the scene.
