SIR - Re your Nostalgia, Then & Now page (T&A, January 24), your reader, Trevor Lake is correct in his recollection that snow had fallen in June but this occurred in 1975 and not in the years suggested.

I was taking my O-level exams at the time and recall that Derbyshire's County Championship match was delayed because of heavy snow in the morning. But by noon the sun shone brightly and the snow rapidly melted.

In fact, 1975 was a very hot summer followed by an even hotter one in 1976.

Mr Lake referred to 1981, and it did snow later in the year but in late April and after Easter. It had been glorious during Easter but a week later it snowed heavily.

We did experience heavy snowfalls during late 1978 to March 1979, the Winter of Discontent as your photograph of Wakefield Road clearly shows.

I hope the above proves helpful to Mr Lake and others too.
