A SPEEDING driver was caught on the dash-camera of a scared motorist travelling at “easily” more than 70mph in a 30-zone.

The mum-of-three who captured the footage was driving along Thornton Road, near Thornton Grammar School.

In a flash, a black Audi can be seen overtaking her car, crossing the hatchings in the middle of the road, narrowly missing a vehicle coming the other way, and disappearing into the distance at speed. The car also passed through a speed camera.

The woman, who did not want to be named, was in her car with her children, aged seven, five and three.

She said: “It scared me. It made me very nervous, with three kids in the car, people driving like that.

“It was doing 70 or 80mph, easily. The driver must have thought he was on a race track. People like that don’t care about other road users. If a child or anyone was crossing the road they would be dead.”

Councillor Richard Dunbar (Lab, Thornton and Allerton), who has been working with primary school pupil Oliver Rhodes on road safety issues, slammed the driver of the Audi.

“That is absolutely terrible and it is completely unacceptable,” he said. “Anybody who drives over the speed limit is putting more people at danger.

“We hope the culprit is caught and brought to justice.”

He added: “There are schools around there so we are always looking at things like these.

“We want to stop people like this. It is about enforcement, but it is also about education across the community, and about looking at the dangers of what can happen if you don’t act responsibly on the road.”

Cllr Dunbar said traffic calming measures could soon be installed on Thornton Road between Thornton village and Keelham.

He added: “We will be looking at Thornton Road as an ongoing issue and what we can do to tackle this issue. We will look at everything we can to make that road as safe as possible.”
