A pedestrian has been killed in an horrific accident involving a car which went out of control at a busy Bradford junction.

The 59-year-old man was crossing the road when he was in collision with a white Vauxhall Corsa at Four Lane Ends.

It is understood he was thrown into the air and carried by the vehicle before it crashed through a metal fence into the garden of a house.

A fleet of paramedic vehicles raced to the scene and treated the casualty before he was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary where he was pronounced dead.

The driver, believed to be in his 20s, was also taken to BRI for treatment. He was arrested by police at the hospital on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The accident happened shortly before 8am on Saturday in West Park Road, close to the junction with Squire Lane, Allerton Road and Bullroyd Crescent.

It is understood the car was being driven down Allerton Road and went out of control moments before the collision occurred as the pedestrian crossed the road.

After the accident the white Corsa could be seen in the garden of a house in West Park Road. The car’s windscreen was smashed and the vehicle appeared to have gone through a wall, narrowly missing a lamp-post.

A single black training shoe lay in the middle of the road 25 yards away.

Police sealed off the scene and a large stretch of Allerton Road for several hours on Saturday as accident investigators gathered evidence.

People in the area reacted with shock to the tragedy.

Mandeep Ram, of nearby shop West Park Stores, said: “It is a bad junction. You’ve got four roads meeting, at school times it is horrendous.

“There’s quite a few accidents there. It’s really bad.”

Abdul Azeem, 28, of West Park Road, had taken his sister to work before the crash occurred and returned to find police “everywhere”, he said.

“There’s been a few accidents there but not on this sort of scale,” he said.

Satpal Singh, of West Park Road, said: “I didn’t see anything but got woken up by the noise of the crash. It was a big thud. The police were here pretty fast. When I came out I saw the car smashed into a yard.”

He said cars often “shoot straight across” the junction.

Councillor Amir Hussain (Lab, Toller) said: “It is quite a complicated junction and I think for that reason people should not be travelling at speed.

“People should take caution and be careful around that area. All I can do is pass my condolences to the friends and family of the gentleman.”

Councillor Arshad Hussain (Lab, Toller) said: “It is very unfortunate someone has lost their life in such a way, going about their life and all of a sudden a tragic thing happens.

“I feel really sorry for the family and my heart goes out to them.”

The dead man’s name was not being released by police until his relatives have been informed. An inquest into his death will be held at a future date.
