He dances, and dances … and dances.
A man dubbed the Shipley Dancing Dude for his Michael Jackson-style moves has become a local celebrity and an internet sensation – in just a week.
The dancer has been regularly seen pulling impressive moves near a roundabout in Victoria Street, Shipley, on the pavement at Fox’s Corner and outside the town’s Asda store.
A video posted of him entertaining puzzled on-lookers has so far attracted nearly 14,000 hits, with viewers logging on from across Britain, Canada and the US.
He has even had a Twitter account set up in his honour.
Charlie Bird, of Shipley-based online retailer Speckyfoureyes. com, said he was “amazed” at the response after he posted the video on YouTube.
Mr Bird, 32, of Bingley, said: “It is the first time I have ever uploaded anything on YouTube and that it has had nearly 14,000 hits is absolutely bonkers!
“The first time I saw him, I was looking out of the window and there was this guy dancing by the side of the road.
“At first I thought he must have had a couple of lunch time drinks but, fair play to the guy, he wasn’t drunk.
“He just loves to dance.”
Despite his celebrity, the dancer’s identity remains a mystery.
When approached by the Telegraph & Argus, the Shipley Dancer simply smiled, waved and danced away.
Mr Bird said he believes he is from eastern Europe, possibly Hungary, and speaks hardly any English.
It is understood he is staying with his daughter at Victoria Mills, Shipley, and appears most mornings and afternoons to perform for his growing legions of fans.
“I think he’s a legend,” said Paul Williams, 22, of Frizinghall, Bradford. “He comes out and doesn’t walk to his destination, he dances. He dances while he’s waiting to cross the road and dances on the pavements.
“All my friends think he’s great. He’s the next Michael Jackson!”
Richard Hunter, 38, of Bingley, said: “I really don’t know where he gets all his energy from but he certainly has plenty of it.”
Hairdresser Diane Scaife, 48, of East Morton, near Keighley, said: “He’s a really cool guy.
“Maybe he’s hoping he gets on Britain’s Got Talent. He’s probably hoping Simon Cowell drives past and spots him!”
