A rugby league club is set to recognise the bravery of its players in the services, including a Commando shot through the head.
Liam Brentley, 25, who plays for Bradford’s Dudley Hill club, was seriously injured in a battle while serving with the Royal Marines in Afghanistan.
The Telegraph & Argus last week revealed Mr Brentley’s amazing escape after a bullet went through his head when he was shot at on patrol in Afghanistan’s Helmand province.
He is one of three soldiers who play for Dudley Hill, along with Dean Urch and Dale Lee, who are currently serving in Afghanistan.
Club bosses have organised events for Help for Heroes, a charity for wounded soldiers and their families.
Deputy chairman Jason Hoyland said: “We understand what they are going through. It brings it home what a sacrifice they are all making.”
The club will kick off its fundraising drive with a sevens tournament on Sunday, August 8, with every amateur rugby league team from Bradford. Rugby union teams may also take part.
Mr Brentley’s wife Samantha gave birth to their daughter Isabella at Queen Elizabeth hospital in Birmingham last week. His mum Yvonne said he was delighted to meet his daughter, who weighed 6lb 12oz.
Mrs Brentley, 47, of Bierley, Bradford, said: “Hopefully it will help his progress.”
Mr Brentley remained in the Selly Oak military hospital over the weekend after a setback in his recuperation.
