Amateur Rugby League: Clayton came out on top by 40-28 in the Pennine Premier Division derby against Undercliffe at Rawdon Meadows.

Undercliffe took an early lead with a try before man-of-the-match Paul Cornforth, the Clayton centre, stamped his class on the game with a first half hat-trick.

With a 20-14 advantage to Clayton, the second half was a ding dong affair in more ways than one. Two forwards received their marching orders - Darren Swales (Clayton) and Kenny Atkins (Undercliffe) - and the loss of goal kicking prop forward Tim Hunt with a cut eye proved costly for Undercliffe.

Clayton's other tries came from Scott Pendlebury (2), Jeremy Robertshaw and a 50 metre special from forward Dave Todd. Chris Parr kicked six goals.

Undercliffe had tries from Russ Sigston, Mickey Foulding (2), Richard Cousens, Paul Priestley and Dave Savage, who also kicked four conversions.

Queensbury moved to just one point behind leaders Underbank Rangers after their 32-28 success at Lindley Swifts. Both sides scored six tries each, but the telling factor was 'Bury's ability to convert four of them against Swift's two.

'Bury opened the scoring with a try from stand-off Gareth McKinley which was converted by his half back partner Carl Smith. The Swifts the scored two unconverted tries before 'Bury wingman Darren Brown crossed. The loss of Smith with a shoulder injury disrupted matters and despite another touchdown from hooker Lee Burnett , converted by Martin Potts, 'Bury went into the break 22-16 down.

They started the second half in fine style, however, 12 points coming in the first five minutes through touchdowns from Mark Gay and Lee Charlton, Potts again adding the extras. With 15 minutes left wingman Trevor Stead clinched the win with a try out wide before a late effort from the Swifts' Australian contingent finished off the scoring. But they were left second best to a Bury side which had Chris Hogg and Gary Prentice outstanding.

Birkenshaw ensured their First Division survival with a 50-8 home win against bottom club Ovenden A. The match was over as a contest when Birkenshaw established a 22-8 interval lead, and they kept the foot on the gas to score seven tries through Alan Menzies, Dave Hurst, Andy Redmond, Micky Glenn, Danny West, Guy Lincoln and Derek Coe. Glenn Tillotson kicked an impressive 11 goals. Birky's Johnny Turpin was outstanding.

In Division Two, Wyke were slow out of the blocks as home outfit Hollinwood raced to an 18-0 first half lead. Wyke really got their act together in the second half, prop forward Craig Scott grabbing a try hat-trick, but their gallant effort ended in a 26-18 defeat. Forward Barney Page was Wyke's best on the day.

In Division Five, leaders Queensbury A were left without a game when Sowerby Bridge Robins A failed to turn up for the second time this season.

Shipley gave a good account of themselves before going down 36-16 at Siddal B. Shipley's points came from tries by Sam Bentley, Tony Perrow and John Askham and Steve Ellison landed two conversions.

West Bowling B were good value for their 29-8 success at home to Illingworth A. Bowling, who were inspired by full back Trevor Tordoff, had tries from Bernard Dowling, Matt Haddock, Wes Brook and Ian Wormald. Jason Woolham posted a drop goal, four conversions and a try.

Victoria Rangers beat Clayton A 20-12 in the first round of the Hudson Foster Bradford Cup. They did the damage in the first half to lead 15-6 at the break. Tries came from Darren Jacobs, Dave Taglione and Darren Booth. Gary Mitchell landed a conversion and a drop goal while Jason Pounder had a try and a drop goal.
