Regional health chiefs have ordered an independent inquiry into the ‘unexplained deaths’ of three people at a Bradford care home and a mental health hospital.
NHS Yorkshire and Humber has commissioned an independent expert to review reports into the deaths of two residents at Weaver Court Residential Care Home in Idle and one at Lynfield Mount Hospital’s Highfield Unit.
A joint investigation into the death of a resident at Weaver Court last November was undertaken by Bradford District Care Trust, which runs the home, and Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, as the resident had been a patient at Bradford Royal Infirmary. The contents of the report will be reviewed during NHS York-shire and Humber’s inquiry.
A spokesman for the organisation said: “NHS Yorkshire and the Humber has commissioned an independent review of the local reports into the deaths of three adults at Weaver Court Learning Disability Care Home and Highfield Unit. The review will identify any collective learning and overarching themes. We expect the review to be complete by the end of November.”
Steve Torrance, regional organiser for Unison, called for an independent inquiry into the death of one of the residents at Weaver Court after the care home was given a zero-star rating by the Care Quality Commission in July. He welcomed the review but called for the original report to be made public.
He said: “There are too many unanswered questions.
“The level of care in Weaver Court has vastly improved and that’s a result of our members raising concerns.”
The Council’s Liberal Demo-crat leader, Councillor Jeanette Sunderland, whose Idle and Thackley ward includes Wea-ver Court, welcomed the review. She said: “It’s with great sadness that there have been a number of concerns around the care provided by the Care Trust.
“I look forward to the receipt of the action plan which must show significant improvements to the care and treatment of some of Bradford’s most vulnerable residents.
“I expect to see some sincere apologies being given to families and carers. It needs to be a frank account of what has happened, why it happened, who’s responsible and what will happen in the future to stop this ever happening again.”
A spokesman for NHS Brad-ford and Airedale said: “At the request of all the relevant health and social care agencies, NHS Yorkshire and the Humber is undertaking an independent review into the unconnected deaths of three adults at Weaver Court and the Highfield Unit which occurred over a period of time, all of whom had complicated physical and health care issues.
“This will enable any collective learning to be taken on board and acted upon.”
Councillor Dale Smith (Con, Wharfedale), the Council’s executive member for adult and community services, said: "Until any reports have been officially received I can't comment further."
