Getting fit for a fiver is one of many half-term opportunities youngsters in the district can look forward to next week.

Bradford Council will offer under-16s unlimited use of swimming, gym and football facilities during the full week for only £5.

The Fitness Frenzy promotion applies to Keighley Leisure Centre, Richard Dunn Sports Centre and Thornton Recreation Centre.

Councillor Anne Hawkes-worth, Bradford Council’s executive member for environment and culture, said: “We want to encourage youngsters to take more exercise and enjoy sports – and having unlimited use of our three premier centres for just £5 for a whole week is a fantastic opportunity for them.”

The Council will also offer free swimming on Saturday, October 31, to mark 1,000 days until the start of the London 2012 Olympics.

Young bookworms can enjoy a two-for-one discount on visits to the Bronte Parsonage Museum in Haworth, where the Bronte sisters wrote their novels. Vouchers will be available at the Tourist Information Centre and newsagents in the village, and visitors to the museum will get to see costumes from the recent ITV adaptation of Wuthering Heights, worn by stars Charlotte Riley and Tom Hardy.

The National Media Museum will put on a range of drawing and animation workshops next week. The Drawing With Light workshop on Tuesday will show visitors how to use light to create their own photograms, then youngsters can create their own family portrait using a variety of printing techniques at the Printed Portraits session on Wednesday. A Mini Moving Drawings workshop takes place on Thursday, showing visitors how to bring drawings to life. All family workshops cost £3 per person and take place from 10.30am until 12.30pm.

Young people aged between 13 and 16 can take part in a range of Halloween-themed activities at an event in Cottingley next Friday. The free event, at Blackhills Scout Campsite, runs from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. Activities include music, lantern making, a fire, face painting and a fancy dress competition.
