The owners of Shipley’s Carnegie Library are being urged to clean up their act – more than eight months after plans were agreed to turn the building into flats.
Councillor Vanda Greenwood has made repeated calls for Carlton Nursing Homes Ltd to clear up rubbish and repair the windows of the building in Leeds Road, Windhill.
Last year Carlton Homes agreed to tidy up the grounds of the former library and dance hall, ahead of plans to convert it into seven apartments.
Planning permission was granted in April for the development, which will include a car park at the rear.
Councillor Greenwood said: “I am pleased they are turning it into flats and giving something back to the community, but what I want is a commitment from them that they are going to tidy the place up with immediate effect.
“I appreciate that, because of the credit crunch they will not start work immediately but it is becoming an extreme eyesore.”
Shipley-based Carlton Nursing Homes has so far given no commitment to clean up the area and no date has been set for building work to start.
Carlton business development manager Simon Kenny said in a statement: “As part of our ongoing commitment to the community in Windhill, Carlton Nursing Homes is in the process of redeveloping the Carnegie Library.
“The regeneration will restore this landmark back to its former glory. We plan to develop seven supported-living apartments which will create accommodation and employment.
“Carlton Nursing Homes has been liaising with local councillors and authorities to ensure the redevelopment is a sustainable development for the future. Work on the Carnegie Library will commence in the not too distant future”
