AN UNINSURED driver was caught speeding at 130mph on Bingley bypass - believed to be the highest recorded by police on the road.
Sergeant Cameron Buchan, who is leading the Operation Steerside crackdown on dangerous drivers in Bradford district, described the speed reached as “unacceptable and unjustifiable”.
Councillor Mark Shaw (Con, Bingley) said residents of the town did not need such “moronic idiots” on their roads.
Steerside officers stopped the driver - who was in a Golf R32 - shortly after midnight on May 16. Police were forced to reach 134mph to catch the Golf.
Cllr Shaw said there needed to be jail sentences for such driving and the vehicles should be seized.

He added: “We have got a nice little town which we are trying to promote, and then we have people like this, abusing the speed limits excessively and causing a danger to everybody.
“We need to set an example and tell them we are not having this in our area. There should be a jail sentence and the car should be crushed.
“It’s utter craziness. These people are just showing off to their friends. It’s no good taking their licences from them, they are not going to be bothered, they will drive anyway. We have to take their cars off them.”
Sgt Buchan said: “It is the highest speed in the 70mph zone that I am aware of and 130mph is the highest in Steerside.
“It beggars belief. That speed - there is no justification for it whatsoever. When the officer told me, we were like, ‘what?’.”
He added: “You don’t need me, as a police officer, to tell anybody that 130mph on a bypass, or anywhere, is unacceptable.
“Anyone in Bradford will know it is unacceptable and unjustifiable.”
Cllr Abdul Jabar, Bradford Council’s executive member for neighbourhoods and community safety, said: “Driving at this kind of speed is totally unacceptable, mindless and puts not only the driver, but other motorists at risk.
“There have to be consequences for this kind of irresponsible behaviour and I trust the police will deal with it appropriately.”
The driver of the Golf was a 20-year-old Keighley man. A police spokesman said he was “reported for summons for various offences, including speeding and driving without insurance”.
Police said the driver slowed down for the roundabout to turn towards Keighley.
On May 1, Steerside officers caught two drivers from Keighley doing 115mph and 109mph on a 50mph stretch of the Bingley bypass. The Ford Focus and Audi A3 were travelling in convoy at the time of the offence.
