ATHLETES braved the chilly Easter Sunday weather to take part in the Queensbury Triathlon today.

Around 100 people took part in the gruelling event, through some of the "challenging" Queensbury terrain.

Organised by Bradford Council's Sports and Leisure team, the event involves a 400 metre swim in Queensbury Pool followed by a 15k cycle through the hilly terrain of Queensbury, Thornton and Keelham and then a 5k run to end the race.

Due to the size of Queensbury Pool, the triathletes set of in groups of eight, meaning the event was spread out over the morning and early afternoon.

Although some of the money raised will go towards the Lord Mayor's Appeal, most of the participants raise money for their own charities, and organisers say some organisations that will benefit this year include Marie Curie and Alzheimers Action.

Organiser Simon Turner said: "The event finished just as the weather was starting to get worse. The beauty of a triathlon is it is very inclusive. There were some people who were on bikes that would have cost £3,000 or £4,000 and some on bikes that probably cost £50.

"And you had some riders who were very young and some in their 70s."

He said the most difficult part of the triathlon was the location - one of the highest points in the district with plenty of slopes and hills. He added: "I think the fact that this is in Queensbury is the toughest part."
