A hospice helping cancer sufferers in Bradford will benefit from a new partnership between Marie Curie and Yorkshire discount retailer Poundworld that could raise £100,000 by 2015.
Poundworld announced the partnership at the Marie Curie Hospice in Maudsley Street, Bradford.
It is the first time the company has supported a national charity. Poundworld has already raised £17,000 for Marie Curie during the Great Daffodil Appeal 2013 – the most raised by a corporate partner.
Managing director Chris Edwards presented a cheque for funds raised in stores so far to nurses at the Bradford hospice. More than £17,000 has been raised by the company across 200 stores including Poundworld and its sister store group, Discount UK, as part of the charity’s annual fundraising.
Because of the ongoing fundraising programme in stores, money raised is expected to reach £100,000 by the end of 2015. Funds donated by Poundworld will help Marie Curie provide free nursing care to terminally ill patients in their own homes, or in one of nine UK hospices including the hospice in Bradford.
Mr Edwards was joined at the hospice by his mother, Alice Edwards, who has long been a keen supporter of the charity. Mr Edwards said: “We’re delighted to announce Marie Curie Cancer Care as our first national charity. It’s fantastic that we are able to use our network of stores and staff to help this very worthwhile cause.”
Elaine Hill, hospice manager at the Marie Curie Hospice Bradford, said: “It’s absolutely great that we have a national business such as Poundworld on board to raise money for our Marie Curie hospice and Marie Curie nationwide.
“Funds raised will be vital to help us provide the best possible quality of life, for local people with terminal illnesses and support for their families, completely free of charge.”
