A pioneering programme of environmental initiatives has seen the University of Bradford ranked in the top ten of green universities.

It was placed ninth out of 143 universities and received a first class award in the People and Planet Green League – the UK’s only comprehensive and independent green ranking of universities.

Recent green projects at the university include a major library refurbishment achieving major carbon savings through maximising insulation, natural ventilation and natural light and a energy efficiency project in the university’s student residences and developing biodiversity on the campus.

Clive Wilson, director of estates and facilities, said: “Sustainability is in our DNA and everything we do as the department of estates and facilities. It is fully embedded into our working processes and allows us not only to follow but actually set best practice in managing a sustainable estate.”

The People and Planet Green League, an annual ranking by the national student campaign group, assesses the environmental and ethical performance of all universities, awarding first class ‘degrees’ to the greenest.

The University of Bradford is among 43 institutions to achieve a ‘First’ this year.
