A MAN in his sixties was taken to hospital following a crash this afternoon.

Police said officers were contacted by the ambulance service shortly after 4pm to a report of a single-vehicle collision at the junction of Gaythorne Road and St Stephen’s Road.

The driver was taken to hospital, said West Yorkshire Police.

There were dramatic scenes as the air ambulance landed in a busy park after the crash.

Debris could be seen scattered across Gaythorne Road, between the junctions with Round Street and St Stephen’s Road, in West Bowling.

Some distance away, on the other side of a mini-roundabout, a dark-coloured car had come to rest near the side of the road, with its front end severely caved-in.

A cordon had been put in place across the street, with police standing guard at either end and officers working within it to establish the circumstances surrounding the smash.

The ambulance service said it received an emergency call at 4.04pm to a collision involving one car.

“Two ambulances, an air ambulance and team leader were dispatched to the scene and one patient was conveyed by road to Bradford Royal Infirmary,” a spokesperson said.

A significant number of people, including children, had gathered at the end of the cordon, curious as to what had taken place.

One onlooker said: “I was just walking past and saw a big incident.

“I was in shock and wondering what had happened.

“I hope they’re well, it’s a very big incident.”

Around half a mile away, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance had landed in Bowling Park on one of the football pitches bordering Parkside Road, after circling the West Bowling area for several minutes.

One resident said: “There’s been serious accident on Gaythorne Road and what’s happened is that there was no landing space nearby so it has safely landed here (in Bowling Park),” said the onlooker.

“I seen it land here. I hope everything alright and I hope the person who is hurt is okay,” he added.
